In Arabic, the word "Umrah" (Arabic عمرة‎) means "visit", "visit". The terminological meaning of this concept includes visiting the Ka`ba, making a tawaf (bypass) around it, passing 7 times between the hills of as-Safa and aal-Marwa, and then shaving or cutting hair.
Some theologians, among them Imam ash-Shafi`i, as well as Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, believed that the performance of ʻUmrah is a mandatory action (like Hajd). As an argument, they cite an verse from the Holy Quran and a hadith from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.
